Yeah, I agree, stories that woobify characters just get pretty sickening...I RPed (OCs) with someone who did that before and I admit to facepalming a lot. I think Disney could make Randy an orphan without going overboard, though, especially since the Monsters movies aren't dark and depressing or anything, more funny and bright with a bit more beneath it, some touching scenes and some minor feelings of pity. I think they handled Mike's problems without going overboard in woobification, like him not being scary enough and being rejected, and having people try to stomp on his dreams over and over again. Yeah, I don't think Randy had an abusive father or anything. His dad could be dead, or the passive and timid "geek" sort, or whatever. Not sure! But I thought the same thing about the Sulley situation, Sulley had the father who left, and Johnny had the overbearing father, so it wouldn't be likely storywise for Randy to have daddy problems like two other characters. I think his dad being dead could clear away that problem easily, thus comes the whole orphan thing (Sorry Randy's parents!). Fully agree about the Randy parts, though I do feel that Mike was a tiny bit woobified in MU; friends have argued that it was to the point that his character wasn't faithful to himself in MI. But that's off-topic.

Going to ignore the "woobifying" part for reasons discussed elsewhere. Though I will say that I never said I still believe that he's an orphan; on the contrary, what I did say was that MU made it unlikely. Not a bad idea when it comes to his belongings. I've heard about the bedsheets, though, as implied in the end of the first post, I'm more into the electronics aspect. XD As for the money, hard to say for me, though I will state the reality that college is expensive and that tuition fees just keep rising.

I apologize if this is the wrong place to inform the staff, but, while I was logged off, I noticed I still had the option to respond to threads as a guest. Honestly, I don't think this is a good idea; not only would it make some possible newbies question why they should register in the first place, there's also the increased chance of getting hateful messages here thanks to the concept of "anon hate".
At the same time, though, I understand needing to talk as a guest if there are login issues, which have happened on WoC (another ProBoards-based site) in the past, so honestly, I say keep just one or two forums open for guests to post in.
Thoughts?

...though I DO have a backstory for him in the story I'm writing, which I go into further detail about later on. I can't give anything away, I'm afraid. Completely makes sense that you can't give his backstory for your fic away yet. XD

Yes, I do remember his spoken concerns about being accepted, which proves the theory many of us old-time Randall fans have been saying when it comes to his motives: that he wanted respect. He even expressed fears about looking like a joke right after we see him blend for the first time. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he was bullied, that being said, and I imagine his needing glasses didn't help that.

Discuss theories about Randy's background here, whether it be his family or theories further analyzing why he is who he is.
Before MU came out, there was a popular idea thrown around that he was an orphan. While possible due to the fact that no one was asking what happened to him after the events of MI, MU seems to have made it extremely unlikely due to all the stuff he had on his side of his and Mike's dorm room.
Similarly, does anyone suppose he's into vintage stuff? Back when I was on Tumblr, I once made an image comparing the design of his TV with the design of a computer for a vintage synthesizer, the synth geek I am.

As disappointed as I am that Randy will likely not be in this short, the one thing that comforts me about it is that it could be because the rest of ROR gets humiliated, as others have speculated here.

So you can easily imagine my reaction when I saw MI early on: initially, I actually HATED the movie, and was REALLY upset about it for its demonizing reptiles via Randall, and I guess what keeps me from moving on is the chance that he isn't pure evil, something I was hoping would've been more obvious to others with MU than it apparently was... Oh man, I felt exactly the same way when I was younger. I used to straight up hate MI, now it's one of my favorite movies! I do hate how so many movies are unfair to reptiles. I like Randall partially because in some ways he's a lot like me personality-wise, and also because in general, if a character resembles any reptile, but particularly if they resemble a lizard, that pretty much automatically increases my interest in that character by a lot. While I feel better upon reading this, now knowing that I'm not the only one with that particular problem, I still feel it best to slow down on discussions. As I had written in a message to CrazyDiamond, which he since publicized with my permission on WoC, I realize my behavior has been borderline extreme, lately, no thanks to my year or so on Tumblr...

I realize that's probably a made-up word, but whatever.
Was talking via PM with toxicdolls, and the subject got me thinking. I may have the special features of MI, yet I don't recall any official word on how monsters grew to view humans as toxic, among other things: only how their appearances changed and their grown motivation to scare them.
Thoughts about this, anyone?
Personally, if a third movie arises, I have a small suspicion that the villain, if any, would be a human. So far in the series we as the audience have seen them as, for the most part, fairly innocent, which would lead one to question why monsters were so scared of them in the first place.

Never read any such fic in-depth beyond summaries, but I think I know the fic you're talking about, importantcake.
And agreed; her room does seem pretty nice for a poor family.

Good idea for a thread, and I'm surprised it didn't appear readily discussed before.
Her fear/hate of snakes most likely being nurtured from her parents aside, it's hard to say for me what else they've done for Boo/Mary other than not being abusive; it does appear she has very good parents, as you pointed out yourself. I noticed the toys in her bedroom, particularly the one of Jessie, so perhaps, in the MI universe, Toy Story is a movie franchise that she grew to love as well to the point that her parents bought related merchandise?
