A thread dedicated to a character who requires far more attention. The Dean of Scaring herself! A thread for discussion's on her character arc, head canons and perhaps even extra-canonical information which isn't in the movie and might be unknown to a lot of us. Also if you ever run into any fanfics or fanart or fan videos on tumblr or other websites you should probably share! (Links mind you that is to the original source).

She has founded the scare games which I thought is neat! I wonder what she was like as a student herself. I imagine her being Victorian goth that goes as she was a HSS member when she was a student at MU.

I think she's easily in my top ten of female characters. She's a total badass, who didn't take no crap from anyone.

I like to think the Dean's sorority, rather like RoR only accepts Scaring majors myself. Overall while a traditionalist she is able to change her mind- including on what is the 'true measure of a monster'. I kind of like her character arc in that it kind of shows no matter how old you get it's still possible to be surprised or learn something. No matter what age you get too, you won't have seen it all. There's a wealth of experiences to be had.
Because maybe in the end she wants to be more surprised now too. It seems if we're to take extra-canonical information on board she also can take on a challenge when she needs to- now becoming a 'headmistress of hilarity'. I like to think she talked a lot to Mike to get things running too.

Dean Hardscrabble was one of the best characters in the entire franchise! It would have been so easy for them to write her as a jerk who only wants to boss students around or make the school look good at all costs, but she is genuinely interested in getting students to learn.
Like Prof. Knight, Dean Hardscrabble is a reasonable authority figure. She was right in some of her assessments (like how poor Mike was not a good fit for the scaring program) but she is also willing to admit when she makes a hasty judgment. She acknowledges Mike's determination and his ability to surprise people, even if he can't scare anyone.
Dean Hardscrabble was really cool. I think they did a great job in balancing her strict nature with a few moments of grace and thoughtfulness. She's a hard worker and she expects everyone to put forth a great deal of effort, even natural scarers like Sulley. In my opinion, that is what makes a good teacher or principal: someone who will challenge your perceptions, someone who will push you to do your best, someone who can give out honest criticism AND honest praise.
A 'nice' teacher who never scolds anyone and gives only easy assignments so everyone can pass, is not really doing their students any favors in the long term. A 'nice' teacher who lets their favorite students avoid detentions or expulsion even when they KNOW that student was guilty of rule-breaking is not doing a proper job.
A 'mean' teacher who looks only to punish others without trying to figure out why disruptive behavior occurs is not a good teacher either. There are also 'mean' teachers who punish everyone by association, when only a small group were at fault. But at the same time, a 'mean' teacher who flunks someone for cheating on a test or refusing to take proper notes in class is only being 'mean' from the lazy student's perspective.
I see too many films and TV shows where the teaching staff fall into generic adversarial roles. I also see a few shows where the teacher is praised for being friendly to the students, even though they don't offer a challenging curriculum. It was really great to see Monsters University subvert those trends.

MY THREAD.
Anyway, I totally agree with everyone above. Instead of being a cardboard antagonist (like Johnny), she was actually developed and fleshed out very well, possibly being the Monsters franchise's most fleshed out female character.
Dean Hardscrabble thought herself the be-all, end-all judge of "who is scary and who is not". She had an enormous ego from years of being nothing less than utter scaring perfection. She's so obsessed with the image of a "perfect scarer" that she has a very, very narrow view of who can make it as a scarer.
Her intense devotion to her program is a bit of double-edged sword like that. In some ways, she's justified in being picky--scaring is an extremely dangerous business. In others though, she's narrow-minded and underestimates the potential of monsters like Oozma Kappa because she simply can't be bothered with them. I wouldn't be surprised if she thought "non-scary" monsters like Mike were beneath her. She boasts in her article (on the MU website) that scaring is the most important thing in their world, and let's not forget the "if you're not scary" line. I love her to death but we need to be honest here: she is a goddamn egomaniac.
That's not to say she doesn't have good qualities. That's what makes her such a great character--she's balanced. And, strangely enough, she shares a very vital character trait with our protagonist--determination. She is just as determined as Mike to produce top scarers, to become holder of the Scare Record, to put 100% of herself into making Monsters University the very best of the best. From that angle we can see her as something of a hero. In fact, she could probably be the protagonist of her own story. But because we see this through Mike's eyes, she's very much the antagonist. (I could write whole essays on their dynamic, don't test me.)
And uuuuuuusgdglfdjkgld don't even get me started on her post-MI. Headmistress of hilarity indeed.

I wouldn't go as far to say that Johnny is a cardboard cut out but the Dean is definitely a far more deep and nuanced character! She's not only the franchise's most fleshed out female character but also the most fleshed out antagonist in the franchise in general as well as the most deep out of the brand new characters MU had to offer.
She's definitely justified in being picky in many ways even if she's flawed- in a way she is one of the first 'filters' of the 'worthy' securing not only the scaring and energy industry but also the security of the monster world- as she stated more or less herself when she rejected Sulley. Mike himself later on in life expects the best out of Sulley too even as his friend. Mike kind of takes no prisoners with his training.
Ultimately while a traditionalist the Dean sees the need for change when necessary as a part of her character arc. She can change herself and even the programme- to recognise monsters like Mike perhaps who while they cannot scare themselves are fantastic with theory and teaching and creating those amazing scarers even if they can't do it. I think Scaring, even in MUs time was hitting probably a rough patch at the time too. I also kind of like to think a part of why she became such a stickler (or well more of one) is because other scaring programmes in the beginnings of the crisis were lowering their standards as a result and she refused to do so. Because in such a crisis if anything standards should be set higher.
The headmistress of hilarity while extra canonical just ultimately fits given how her arc went down- she was already shown as being willing to change the programme in order to make it to the best of its ability when she saw Sulley and Mike and how they worked. Of course being so into Scaring the willingness change to laughter probably 'surprised' some people as well. At least those who didn't know here very well.
