I read something weird on one of the Pixar wiki's about Monstropolis: "According to a DVD bonus feature "History of the Monster World", Monstropolis was founded after all of the monsters (originally a race of creatures called Mons), who once co-existed with humans, were all chased off the mainland, and eventually moved to an island in an unknown part of the world (which Monstropolis is implied to be located) where they have lived ever since and evolved into monsters by eating the strange fruit on the island (possibly the fruit sold at Tony's Grosseries), and that the only way for them to enter human-inhabited areas was via closet doors." Found here
Personally, I was kinda amazed when I read it. Does anyone know where, on the DVD, this can be found? Or is it not true? I actually don't have Monsters Inc. (crazy, I know), but if I ever get my hands on it, I'd like to find out where they actually said this.

It's on the second disc, along with the outtakes and Mike's New Car.

Thanks importantcake. I've never seen the DVD version either, just whatever was broadcast on TV. There are a bunch of Pixar bonus features I haven't watched either.
To be honest, I don't really like that explanation. I would have preferred monsters to have a more supernatural or otherworldly explanation beyond 'ate some weird fruit'. That's like something out of One Piece.

Well, this is supposed to be more of a fictional monster world mythology, rather than a real explanation...

I heard it wasn't fruit but that they took on the DNA from what they ate. So Randalls ancestors would have eaten reptiles and lizards. It would explain why some monsters are jelly like.
